Japan shocked the world when they took out Germany, the reigning champion and host country, in the quarterfinals. Their prize is a date with Sweden in the semifinals.

Sweden hasn't lost once in this tournament and they have strung together stellar performances, including a huge victory over the US.

With Germany and Brazil out of the picture, Sweden is one of the scariest teams still involved. Their toughest possible matchup remaining would be the US in the final and they have already proven they can hang with the tournament favorite.

That being said, Japan has earned their keep in this tournament. They were largely written off, but have shown a lot of resolve in taking on an opponent they were grossly outmatched against.

Most people expect Japan to lose in this stage of the tournament, but it's unfair to write them off. They were criticized for emerging from a weaker bracket, but that was not in their control. Now that they have made a statement by taking down Germany, some want to discount it as an aberration, a fluke.

Hopefully for Sweden's sake, they aren't headed into this game thinking they are going to shellack Japan. This is a Japanese team with a lot of fire power and if Japan limits their defensive miscues, they could steal yet another low scoring game.

Even so, Sweden should still be favored. They are looking awfully impressive and everyone is wanting to see a USA vs Sweden final, now that Germany is out of contention.

Sweden has the ability to get up early on teams and force them to play catchup all match long. They are sound defensively, which makes it extremely for teams to get out of a hole if they dig one early.

Japan will need to stay the course and keep the game close. They aren't going to win in the 4:0 fashion they took down Mexico in. Staying calm and collected during the match and not letting things get out of hand allowed Japan to make it this far. They will have to carry the same game plan into this match if they want to take down Sweden.
